The Sarmatians are the steppe people who brought the idea of the hard charging mounted warrior to the West as the progenitor of the knight. Under their perhaps apocryphal king, Saitapharnes, the Sarmatians swept the Eurasian plains and assimilated earlier steppe cultures into their confederation.
