Triumph! Epic Conflicts Events

WGC runs a series of Triumph! introductory games known as Epic Conflicts. Four matched pairs of armies fight on preset terrain boards to allow players to jump right into the play of the game. Rules are taught through the game with the assistance of one of the event team. Games usually last an hour and players are encouraged to stay for more than one game.

The matched pairs are chosen with historical opponents carefully selected to demonstrate specific aspects of the game.

Ivar the Boneless (Vikings) vs Alfred the Great (Middle Anglo Saxon)
This Dark Age slog pits two very similar armies against each other. Each army is composed of foot troops with relatively high combat factors that makes destroying enemy stands outright difficult. This match up demonstrates the importance of "order of combats" and how armies lose cohesion over the course of a battle. These battles are won with attention to how command points are used and where to fight when.

Richard the Lionheart (Later Crusaders) vs Saladin (Ayyubid Egyptian)
This Crusades era match up pits two very different armies against each other. Richard's Crusaders are a mix of hard fighting knights and steady foot. Saladin fields an all mounted army with two thirds of his force moving at the fastest speed. This pairing demonstrates some of the "rock-paper-scissors" aspect of the game where exceptions to standard combat results matter. These battles are won by being able to see and take advantage of small opportunities that come and go quickly in this match up.

Rameses (New Kingdom Egyptian) vs Mutawalli (Hittite)
This Biblical era pairing pits two Chariot armies against each other in the era of the battle of Kadesh. Both armies contain a mix of foot troop types and a strong cavalry army. This match up demonstrates the importance of combined arms fighting in Triumph! Winning these games usually requires coordination between foot and mounted troops.

Manius Pomponius Matho (Camillan Roman) vs Gettorix (Warlike Gallic)
This Classical era match up pits disciplined Romans versus fierce Gallic tribes. Both armies have a large body of solid foot troops with supporting cavalry and foot troops. This pairing demonstrates the importance of fighting on the wings to the outcome of a central fight. It also shows the interaction between high combat factor troops (Roman Elite Foot) and lower combat factor troops who shatter opponents (Gallic Warriors). Winning these games often depends on who wins the flanks and how command points are prioritized and allocated.
